Bring bulbs inside

YOU DON’T have to be a meteo-
rologist to know that winter is in
the air — just look around and
observe the frenzied activity that is
taking place. Animals are busy
gathering food for the long
months, birds are flying south and,
as gardeners, we should be prepar-
ing our gardens.

Summer-flowering bulbs, like
dahlias and gladiolus, stop bloom-
ing with the first hard frost and the
foliage dies back. When this oc-
curs, it is time to bring the bulbs
inside.

To do this, simply dig them up,
shaking off as much loose soil as
possible and dry them for a week
or so until the remaining soil has
dried completely and can
removed easily. Then cut back the
foliage to about 3 cm above the
bulb and lightly apply fungicide or
insecticide to help prevent disease
and insects from harming the
bulbs. Next, store them in a cool (5
to 10°C), dry place such as an
unheated basement or cupboard.

Bulb flowers, however, are not
the only plants that need attention.

Now is the time to remove the
dead parts of perennials, being
careful not to damage their bases.
Also, trim roses, but only slightly.
Save the major pruning for the
spring when the winter damage can
be removed. Raking up fallen
leaves from your lawn also is a
good idea so that the grass
underneath will not be choked.
Because roses and spring-flower-
ing bulbs (which, if not yet
planted, still can be if the ground
is workable) need protection from
the winter cold, it’s a good idea to
apply a mulch to the garden.
However, the mulch should not be
applied urtii the frost is antici-
pated, Laying it down prematurely

will stimulate the bulb plants to
emerge, exposing them to the cold.

Using an organic mulch is
preferable to a non-organic one
(e.g. plastic film). Hay and straw,
brush, sawdust, leaves, legumes
(alfalfa and clover) and compost
are recommended. In addition to
helping the soil retain moisture and
protecting the plants underneath,
organic mulch, unlike non-organic
materials, returns nutrients to the
soil, making for a_ healthier
garden.

By taking these few moments
now to prepare your garden, you
will be that much closer to having
a beautiful garden next year.
