FOCD Wednesday, February 13, 1991 - North Shore News — 34 Stock up as the cycle warrants THE TOOTHPASTE (s) we're using — Macleans and Close-Up — cost me 89¢ and ml size. They regularly sell for up to $2 atube. How come? Easy. When Save-On featured Macleans, | stocked up. Shopper's cut the price of Close-Up and I bought a lot. Every time | see Nabob coffee on sale for $1.87, I stock up — it keeps. And, it tastes even better when you know you've paid a doliar less than if you bought at the regular price. One rule [ learned a long time ago — buy when the prices drop and buy enough to last about five weeks. It’s odd, but prices seem to rotate in that length of time. There’s not much point in buy- ing large quantities of stuff you use occasionally. By the time you get down to the last of it, you're too old to chew it. But, staples like toothpaste? Toilet paper? Coffee? Buy a lot. Even a case lot, if you've got the space to store it. Next lesson: buy spices in small quantities. Bulk foods are ideal for this. The shelf life of most herbs and spices is six months, and who knows how long the stuff has been on the shelf before you throw it in your cart? Save shaker-top spice jars if you don’: have a spice rack. Gum on your own label, including the date of purchase. When in doubt, throw it out. Why ruin five bucks worth of food with five cents worth of stale spice? Now, speaking of special prices, turkeys were a bargain last week. A reader called and said she’d bought one but didn’t want to do a re-run on Christmas. it’s a bit early to look to the barbecue so what could I suggest? Here is a recipe that may sound odd but tastes wonderful. The kids call it: Mom’s Weird Turkey 1 - 16 Ib. (approx.) turkey, com- pletely thawed Marinade: Ys cup olive oil 8 big jolts Worcestershire sauce 4 big shakes each: seasoned salt, seasoned pepper 2 tablespoons vinegar Y% cup dry mustard Remove giblets from turkey. Dry the bird well. Mix marinade together with a wire wisk and smear over entire bird, inside and out, 79¢ a tube, respectively, 100 Barbara McCreadio BUDGET BEATERS And then: 6 strips bacon 1 onion 2 cups chicken stock 1 square (1 foot) old cotton sheet or cheesecloth Yz cup olive oil Set well pasted bird in shallow roaster. Lay bacon strips over breast, tucking ends into wing and leg crevices. Tuck onion in cavity. Pour chicken stock in roaster. Soak cloth in oif and lay lightly on top of breast. Roast at 300° about 15 minutes per pound — allow an hour at the end to make sure the internal temperature on your meat ther- mometer is up to 190° and to give the meat a chance to settle for easier carving. For the last couple of minutes in the oven, remove cheesecloth and turn on your broiler. Watch the bird carefully. This crisps the bacon and gives a crackly top. 1 do not make gravy from the pan drippings until the next day — set the pan outside in your covered barbecue or in the trunk of your car — it’s cold enough out there to keep it safe. Next day, the leftover turkey, with gravy, makes the best hot turkey sandwiches you've ever tasted. ace There's no sense in being weird with your turkey unless you follow through with unconven- tional accompaniments.
