The restaurant's food is far from haute cuisine, but plates arrive with little vacant white space and lots of no-nonsense meat and : potatoes. Cheers isa place of nightly specials, salad bars and buffets. -Tuesday night it’s Two for Ore Burgers; Wednesday is Wings Night (21 cents each); Thursday night: Prime Rib or New York Steak with soup and salad bar (two for $17.99). Its regular menu offers the full range of familiar modern culinary Canadiana that will leave no mid- ‘dle-of-the-rocd palate dissatisfied and no street-level appetite wan- ting. it has therefore become a regu- lar haunt for young families, low- rent office parties and economy- ; minded alderly diners. “Two-fisted sandwich food (ham- burgers, BLTs, beef dips, stuffed. -croissants).shares equal menu ~ billing with pastas and other plain ~ but filling meat and fish- based en- trees. ‘Entree prices range irom around $6 up to $13, with a pair of high- ‘flyers (Steak and Lobster, $22.95; ‘Rock Lobster Tail, $15.95) filling ~ - out the top end. Cheers, however, is not the _, place to wager large dining doilars on the kitchen’s finesse. The sampled buffet, for exam- ple, presented a wide assortment of meats, vegetables, pastas and desserts, but most of the items that were supposed to be hot were tepid. Some of the more interesting- looking items, meanwhile, were disanpointing. Sushi rolls, for example,’ were stuffed with lettuce and sprinkled with fish roe, thereby rendering a ‘good idea flat and lifeless. Cheers does better with the basics. The children’s hamburgers were good dollar value. They cameona full-sized sesame seed bun with a. side of fries. Lettuce, tomato and cheese was 95cents extra, but the $3.99 price included a soft drink anda farge i ice cream sundae. The Shrimp and Steak entree froin Cheers’ special dinner menu came with rice and assorted boiled vegetables. it included cight mid-sized grill- ed shrimps and a steak that was grilled to medium-rare specifica- tions. Cheers has only a bare-bones wine list (a dozen bottles, $13 to $17), but offers an extensive cocktail selection and a couple of local beers on tap. Service is provided by a young: waiting staff that is for the most - _ part pleasant and hard-working. It is beginning to show some... wear and tear and its food is less: impressive than when it began, but Cheers still offers a good dollar _ ‘value in the extremely competitive family dining division. : .
