BUSINESS BRIEFS TODAY IS “Operator Apprecia- tion Day" at B.C. Tel, the day the public is asked to say thank you when they speak to an opera- tor, This year, a new advanced op- erator switchboard system has been installed at B.C. Tel and it will change the way operators work and how customers are serv- ed. Called the “Traffic Operator Position System’, or TOPS, the new equipment will begin full ser- vice Oct. 21. The ergonomically-designed work stations are fully adjustable, allowing operators to personalize their work area for standing or sitting. In addition, the new system will mean a faster response time to all customer calls. “Operators are the people who make the human connection in the high technology telecommunica- tions field,’ said Bill McCourt, BC Tel executive vice-president of telephone operations. ‘‘Operator Appreciation Day is a way for the public and B.C. Tel to show how much their contribution means to all of us.”” tke THIS YEAR marks the 10th an- -‘niversary of the first personal computer fair to be held in the Vancouver area. We'll see the answer to that over the next decade or so, but there’s no doubt that our baby boomers are setting out money management as one of their top priorities as they approach middle age. The first wave of this genera- tion hit the maternity wards in 1947. They filled the campuses in the ’60s, climbed the corporate ladders in the ’70s and ’80s, and they’re now settling into their new homes for the °90s. This transformation from radi- cal to couch potato involves a change in priorities. The boomers go out less than they used to. They prefer to watch movies on their VCRs rather than going to a movie theatre. They don’t want to change the world any more — they just want to put their kids through school, pay off the mor- tgage, pay less taxes and make sure they’ve got enough money to retire with dignity. This last point is a high priori- ty, and it’s going to be tougher to accomplish as we move ahead into the next century. Today there are eight Canadians below 65 for every one over that age. By the time our boomers retire, the ratio will be four to one. What this means is that for many of these people, government sponsored retirement benefits simply won't be available in the future. Investment dealers and money managers are as much aware of the problems boomers are facing as anyone — and they are tailor- ing their products and services to mect the needs of the couch potato investor. What does this investor want? Low commissions and administra- tion fees. Solid money manage- ment for all their assets. And it seems that the trend is moving in this direction. Major investment dealers these days now offer some type of asset manage- ment account available to clients for a small, tax-deductible fee. These accounts provide chequing privileges, competitive interest rates, portfolio analysis, income lax. summaries and investment planning. Some of these accounts may include special rates for RRSP administration fees. In other words, couch potato investors are expecting the best and are starting to get it.
