U.S. fireworks need permits REVENUE Canada wishes to remind Canadians that fire- works cannot be legally imported from the United States without a permit. Only fireworks that have been tested and approved bv Natural Resources Canada (Explosives Branch) are lega! in Canada. Each year there are many serious injuries associated with the use of unlaw filly imported fireworks. Revenue Canada, Customs Border Services, is committed ro protecting Canadians by keeping illegal and dangerous fireworks out of the country. “Some retailers in’ the United States are advertising fireworks in local Canadian newspapers,” said — Gail! Stewart, Director of the Pacific Highway border crossing. “This may lead Canadians to believe that they can import fireworks from the U.S, but unless they have a permit, ‘oun | Pr: that's not correct.” Canada Customs takes: its role of protecting Canadians from dangerous fireworks very seriously. “We have already prevent- ed seme travellers from bring: ing back illegal tireworks and we are concerned that they aren't aware of the dangers and risks they are taking,” said Stewart. “Ifa traveller declares fire- works that have not been approved for sale in Canada, we will net alow them to be imported into Canada,” advis- es Stewart. When undeclared fireworks are discovered by customs officers, the repercussions can be even greater — fireworks will be contiscated | and importers may be prosecuted and/or the vehicle could be seized.
