34 — Friday, April 24, 1998 — North Shore News Author gives something to remember YOUNG and old are missing connections to past and furure if grandparents and grandchildren fail to connect, says Canadian book author Susan Bosak. “There is a lot of value in intergenerational relationships,” says the former North Van resident, speaking from her home north of Toronto, “And unfortunately i in our society we tend to be age-segregated.” Seniors move south or live in retirement communities that don’t allow children. Fewer grandparents live with their families today than they did in years past. And that means both young and old are losing out, savs Bosak. Bosak leads workshops with grandparents, Parents, teachers znd children across Canada and in the U.S. From these work- shops, came the idea for a picture book, Something to Remember Mer By ($19.95), which Bosak published last year. The book speaks to all generations, says the author. It is for parents to read with their child or grandchild and for adults to give to their aging parents. While the story was inspired by Bosak’s close relationship with her own grandmother, she wrote it as a universal celebra- tion of the special relationship benween generations, says the author. A Reader’s Companion free comes with the book and con- tains activities and information for the young and ald to share. Bosak will be signing copies of Something to Remember Me By at the Book Company in Park Reval’s north mall today, April 24, at 7 pun. — Layne Christensen .
