The North Vancouver councillor once had more than a quick embrace with communism. But after the dance was over, Crist didn’t lose the soft-heart- ed-for-humanity idealism that led him down that particular garden path, if you can untangle my metaphor. He manages to be council’s sober con- science, loyal opposition and mischievous clown, sometimes simultaneously. Crist is bang-on in savaging those faux - socialists in Victoria, the “New” “Democratic” Party — champions of the people, except when it comes to matters like actually allowing democracy into their chaotic and discredited regional health board system. Which is approximately as democratic as Louis XIV’s court — minus the inter- esting hats and beautiful women. The other day Crist scorched — and his fellow councillors obliged by unani- mously stoking the coals — the NDP for its Stalinist stonewalling of elections fer the boards. The stonewaller-in-chief is Health Minister Joy MacPhail. She came into the portfolio affecting great concern for the reeling, confused “system,” which is about as orderly as the Vancouver Sun’s Christmas parties in the era of Don Cromie. It’s serious stuff when the North Shore’s 200 doctors are in open rebellion against the North Shore Health Region and its $155,000-a-year CEO, Inge Schamborzki. . She took the hatchet to well-regarded Lions Gate Hospital CEO Lynette Best last spring and clumsily cut off a large chunk of her own popularity in doing so. \ Dr. Peter Richards, the (dangerous word ahead, Joy!) elected president of the hospital’s medical staft, won’t speak to Inge. Richards is dead-accurate in describing the appointed board as “unelected and unaccountable to the cit- izens of the North Shore.” The board’s chairman and former West Van councillor Diana Hutchinson — not a New Democrat the last time I looked — threatened to sue Richards for remarks that “we perceive ... may be defamatory.” If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, Diana.
