IT*SA scene played out at financial institutions everywhere:
a lunchtime line-up 10 persons strong waits to be served by
two overworked tellers, as signs coax people to the other
side: the automated teller machine. Sometimes the mes-
sage is less subtie and a manager works the line, extolling the
virtues of automaticn to the unconverted, who would rather
see hinvher behind the counter processing their mortgage
payments. Customer service is quickly becoming obsolete as
tellers are Laid off despite the record profits of banks. In their
place is direct deposit, on-line banking, ATMs, and even
drive-through banking. But do these new “services” justify
the hefty charges that some people rack up by month's end?
