Divine Miss M WOWS audience Joy — Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL BETTE MIDLER, the Divine Miss M, was at her very best Tuesday night at the Pacific Coliseum! Powerful leather lungs, sassy, audacious and positively energetic, Midler is a raunchy Mitzi Gaynor with a gigantic voice! She never stopped moving and she never stopped talking. The concert was 2% hours long with one 15 minute intermission and had been sold out for months. Her opening was an absolute show-stopper with Bette perched high golden sun-swathed lamé. She came off her perch, came right to the edge of the stage, looked down at the front row, who were craning their collective necks, and said, “Hey! it’s the American Express Gold Card ticket-holders! Yuppy Swine! And how is every- thing in the British Properties?” She did her mermaid shtick, the burlesque number with bare breasts bouncing and Jots of body-painting. She did jokes about cleavage, Lisa- Marie Presley, John Bobbit, Joey Buttafucco, Jean Chrétien, Brian Mulroney and her own efforts to be an eco-warrior and composting queen of 1994. . In between teetering all over the Stage, she sang most of her hits, including The Rose, Do You Want To Dance?, Delta Dawn, Boogie Waogie Bugle Boy, the powerful From a Distance and finally, The Wind Beneath My Wings. Her encore was That's the Glory of Love. Lots of VIPs at the concert, including two sets of twins, the Morrey Brothers and the Barnett boys. Also Molson’s John Winter, Front Page Challenge’s Cameron Bell, U-TV's Diane Johnson, Pacific Press’ Lynn Munro, miae- stro Dal Richards, and the British deputy consul general Ron Boardman, along with about another 10,000 ecstatic fans... Speaking of eestasy, if was a great day last Saturday for popular sports guy Tommy Larscheid. The voice of the B.C. Lions got mar- ried! Tom is # widower with two grown children and last weekend he wed his long-time sweetheart, the lovely Lesfie, the legal lady trom Ladner Downs, down in Las Vegas. Now, Lalways thought that Vegas was the place to go to untic the marital knot! Nevertheless, it was a very classy affair, Tom wore a well-cut suit, his bride wore a long gown of oyster satin and car- ried a beautiful bouquet. There was wedding cake, flowers and pho- tographs. On hand for the happy nuptials were Tom's friend and colleague, J. Paul McConnell and his wife Alix Kerr, and Bob and Nancy Dunn. The guys were there on assignment to cover the football game between the B.C. Lions and the Las Vegas Posse so after the wedding ceremony, the two guys went to work. The honeymoon will take place in February when Thomas has some free time. Last week the Purdy's people got caught with chocolate all over their red faces! They had created a delectable chocolate medallion to celebrate their sponsorship of the Dive B.C. athletes in the Commonwealth Games. But their enthusiastic sup- port got them in trouble with the Games’ logo police when they used the words “Commonwealth Games.” So, after much brainstorming, they decided that, rather than destroy the 5,000 medallions, they'd redesign them. They redid the mold in a giant meltdown Tuesday morning at the Purdy's chocolate plant on Kingsway with candy master Tom Cinnamon of West Van tossing the chocolate goodies into the bubbling vat and launched their new Medal of Honor medallion which will continue to support Team Purdy divers — West Van sisters Paige and Megan Gordon, Jeff Bacon and Karl Fix — in their competitive efforts at the famed over in Victoria... And the next voice you hear on AM 1040 airwaves will be North Van's talented Roger Allford. Roger will join pert Julie Brown in a daily 2 to 3 p.m. open-tine show starting Labor Day. Cheers!
