Witch’s Fang is a classic
mountaineering tale updated.
Recovering from a car accident
which has left him with a dodgy
foot and chips on both shoulders,

high-school student Todd
Rushton involves his sister Jess
and best friend Howie in an ill-
advised attempt to ascend one of
the last unclimibed peaks in
southwestern B.C.: Witch's Fang.

(The real Witch’s Tooth is in
the Tanatalus Range and was
climbed in 1965; the inspiration
for Kellerhals-Stewart’s fictional
fang is probably Vulcan's
Thumb, a 7,500-ft. spire of grim

15, Kellerhals-Stewart has all the
details right and a flair for scare
that could bring on an agorapho-
hic attack in the cosiest couch-
potato. Fler experience in the
mountains is also what gives
Witch's Fang its emotional
depth.

the Fang for all the wrong rea-
sons: a proprietary sense that it is
“his” mountain and fear that his
climbing nemesis, Kurt Stone, or
a rumored expedition by the
Seattle Mountaineers will scale it
lirst.

The lessons he learns are the
best that true mountaineering
can teach: that “victory” is
always ephemeral (no one “con-
quers” a mountain by climbing
it), and that the real values taught
by snow and rock are faith in
one’s team companions and loy-
alty to them above all.
