sondheim show sparkles From page 214 the play was given greater authority. But status is dependent upon relationships and none of Falstaff’s are established clearly off the top. He commands the stage rather than his fellows. Instead, pace is all and Campbeff winds up the action like a hurdy-gurdy until the char- acters are so ensnared in their multiple plots they forget where they are rushing off to next. incidentally, the attempt to score this and add a lot of off- stage sound effects is unfortu- nately twentieth rather than nine- teenth century and hugely dis- tracting from the actors who are already working hard enough. In the middie of this wildly spinning top several actors man- age to create large characters and still retain their humanity. All of the women do well but Denyse Wilson shines as Mistress Quickly. Her brass always rang true. And surprisingly stealing the show was Scott Bellis’ foolish Ford. The intensity of his jealousy was comically delicious, but the unexpected surprise was the pathos of his humiliation. Bravo! If the rest of the production does not quite measure up to this complexity it is, nevertheless, bold, colorful and generally comic. FIRST IMPRESSIONS Theatre have an interesting musica! evening awaiting you if you like the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim. Side By Side By Sondheim runs at the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre to july 26 and features the vocal talents of Andrea Brant, Sonia Church and Mitchell Mackay as well as two excellent pianists: Eleanor Morgan and Mark Matterson. Narrator Paul Kloegman tells you all you need to know about the early career of a truly great lyricist while the singers offer extracts from shows like: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Follies, Company, Gypsy, A Little Night Music and West Side Story. If the harmonies are not always perfect, Mackay provides a solid strength to the phrasing while Brant is delightfully natur- al, providing a real! sparkle to the staging. Kloegman’s sardonic humor will work better when he gets his nose out of his notes but the dou- ble entendres are too obvious to fit comfortably with Sondheim. And it is Sondheim who is the real star of the evening. Just lis- tening to the words is reason enough to see this show. To July 23. Information: 929- 9456.
