By Michael Becker News Reporter Six Field Squadron Master-Cpl. Bryan Couch returned to the North Shore recently for a brief break from his posting al a camp near the town of Deruvar in Croatia. Couch 3 volunteered eariier this year to join the § Combat Enginecring Regiment based at CFB Chilliwack. Said Couch, ‘I’ve never really ‘done anything like that before. I've put so much time into the militia. They've sent me to Ger- many and places like that before. fm just the kind of person, if somebody needs help, ill drop that and help the peopie.”’ The reservist arrived in Zagreb on Sept. 27. He is committed to a six-month period in Croatia. Couch takes‘the dangerous side of his job, the supervision of mine removal and road-clearing, in stride. His troop works closely with Croatian engineers through an in- terpreter They travel with infantry and medical sections for support. “Right now what we're doing is supervision of lifting minefields in the area — roads, fields, generally where people have to have access back and forth. ‘There are Serbian-laid minefields, and what we do is supervise the Croatians going through the minefields. They do the actual mine lifting,’’ Couch said. Daruvar is not in the thick of the civil war battle area. “IT wouldn't say it’s near fighting.
