seem rather conventional exam-
ples of their kind exhibiting little of
the innovative genius that charac-
terizes Davidson’s non-sculpiural
design sense.

In such paintings as Double
Negative and The World Is as
Sharp as the Edge of a Knife we
can see the artist’s devotion to ab-
solute abstraction cultivated in
conjunction with the traditionally
mannered form-line design
framework which, derived from
the natural world and imbued with

its spiritual forces, is the main-
spring of all Nosthwest Coast tn-
dian art.
In such works as Seawall & Killer

Whales and Eagles, both of which
seem likely choices for serigeaphs
because both present traditional
subjects more accessibly handled
than those in the painted drum
series, we earn the lesson of
Double Negative: the use of con-
trast to generate focus, thereby
circumventing the implicit confu-
sion, or even claustrophohia, thai
typically accompanies any art in
which a visual field is permitted to
become saturated with its awn
design elements — as is atten the

case in Northwest Coast indian
art.

With the current renaissance of
Northwest Coast Indian art has
come the resurgence of its culture
and an awakening of self-esteem
in its peuple.

Growth and evolution are surely
inevitable mechanisms of any art.
The beauty of Davidson's ac-
complishment is that he is able to

maintain his innovative artistic
identity without undermining the
historical integrity of its source,
which in a sense is precisely what
he is attempting to achieve with
the revitalization of his people and
its culture.
