Emergency response personnes were calied to the Park Royal Towers apartments, 106-935 Marine Dr.. at ap- proximately 8:30 p.m. To press time Tuesday, the police kad a suspect in custody. The police did not name the victim identified because next of kin had not been identified; they also declined to release further information regarding the investigation. Inquiry urged LIBERAL OPPOSITION MLAs are calling for an in- dependent inquiry into the fatal shuoting of a 22-year- old North Vancouver man last week. Daniel Possee was shot during a May 12 police drug raid. Said West Vancouver-Garibaldi Liberal MLA David Mitchell, ‘‘We understand that there are already some internal police investigations going on into this matter and that’s good, but right now there is such concern throughout the community with respect to a number of incidents where it is alleged that police have used ex- cessive force in net only this incident but in other inci- dents that have occurred throughout B.C. in the last short while.” Mitchell said an independent review would act to restore public confidence in policing authorities. Meanwhile, North Vanceuver-Lonsdale NDP MLA David Schreck has asked the attorney general for an opinion on a call for an independent inquiry. Said Schreck, *‘The difficulty becomes that there are currently three investigations under way, two by police and one by the coroner’s office. I think it is as important to be fair to the police involved as it is to be to the vic- tims of the incident. That’s why it is important to get advice from the staff of the ministry of the A-G tu see whether an independent review might be appropriate.”’ Date corrected A MAY 17 News story incorrectly stated that the West Vancouver District 45 school board had scheduled a public information night on the controversial Hillside middle school issue for Tuesday, June 9. The meeting, in fact, has been scheduled for Monday, June 8, in the theatre of West Vancouver Secondary School, 17506 Mathers Ave., West Vancouver. It is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. *Refers to Fabricland Sewing Ciub Members 2562 Basel thy, us SE RGAE deg Photo submitied DUBSED PROJECT Cats Kingdom by its creator, the weil- constructed encampment is built on a series of rock-lined ter- races and includes two shelters. Lees believes the man who built the encampment took in aban- doned cats. “Apparently it was a drop-off spot for cats from people from the city, and apparently the guy would befriend them and monitor their actions and so on. It’s all part of the unofficial culture as odd as it may seem,” he said. Lees said the municipality regu- larly monitors the activities of Squatters passing through the wilderness areas. “It’s important that they know that we know that they are there. We're anxious primarily about fires, and we're very anxious about sanitation. **We have a couple of people who patrol these areas as part of regular trail maintenance, and if these peopie are making a mess, we escort them out because they are kind of kooky. We don’t want to endanger in any way the hiking public,’” he said. WEST VAN FLORIST 1821 MARINE DRIVE, WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. V7V 1J7 922-4171 FAX: 922-9735 922-3968
