34 - Sunday, January 19, 1992 - North Shore News SPORTS Basketball tournament showcased outstanding provincial girls’ teams THE NORTH Shore Firefighters’ high school basketball tourna- ment, firmly established as the most prestigious annual senior girls’ competition in B.C. aside from the provincial champion- ships, overcame an unusual and unexpected last-minute floor problem at West Vancouver Sec- ondary in order to showcase some outstanding talent last weekend. The majority of the tourna- ment, originally scheduled for West Van, had to be moved to Sentinel when the varnish in West Van’s gym — put on during the Christmas holidays — began peel- ing off. Salmon Arm Jeweis, ranked number one among the province’s “AAA” teams,- defeated West Van Highlanders in the 16-team tourney’s semi-final and then stopped seventh-ranked Richmond 89-60 in the final. The tournament, hosted by sev- eral North Shore teams. with the main host rotating annually, is sponsored by the North Shore’s three firefighting forces. West Van won their first two games over Chilliwack 89-54 and over Victorian Country from Australia 70-67 prior to the semis. West Van then finished fifth with a 75-56 loss to Victoria’s Lam- brick Park. West Van’s Stephanie Haladner was named to the tournament’s first all-star team and Lori Hallstrom was selected the best defensive player. Carson Graham’s Cathrine Olsen was picked for the second team while Amy Leger won the manager’s foul shooting competi- . tion with seven out of 10 shots. Windsor opened with a 68-40 win over Suzrey’s Queen Elizabeth before losing to Lambrick 71-41 and John Barsby of Nanaimo 45-43, Carson Graham fell Barsby and 55-54 to Victoria Country before beating Queen Elizabeth 54-48.
