FORMER FIGURE SKATING CHAMP Delmaestro named to italian hall of fame NORTH VANCOUVER former figure skater Bruno Delmaestro will be inducted in to the Italian Cultural Centre Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 23. “He was chosen because he distinguished himself in sport, be- ing the champion of Italian figure skating twice,’’ said centre execu- tive director Anna Terana. Terana said that although most Hall of Famers are much older when inducted, Delmaestro was selected because he’d concluded his competitive skating career and would be a good example to Italian Canadian youths. Delmaestro’s figure skating ca- reer includes years on competition both for Canada and for Italy. In 1984 he was named to the Italian Olympic team but his Olympic dreams were cut short by a leg in- WV man wins tennis tourney WEST VANCOUVER’S Russell Stuart won the Pepsi Tennis Championship after defeating Jesse Walter at the Four Seasons Tennis Club in Everett, Washington. A big serve and impressive net game helped third seed Stuart re- cord a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the fifth seed from Yakima. “T just went in there thinking I could win,’’ Stuart said. He added that Walters was playing well, knocking out top seed Chris San- toso from North Vancouver earlier. This is the second time in six matches Stuart has defeated Walter. Stuart edged out North Van- couver’s Matthew Walsh 6-2, 7-5 in the quarter finals and second seed Greg Wesenberg of Seattle in the semi final. Meanwhile Jonathon Miller of West Vancouver took Walter to a three set match in the quarter finals before bowing out 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, Stuart is ranked third in under- 14 championship singles in B.C. jury. Now 26 and recovered from his injury, Delmaestro is making a ca- reer out of teaching skating. He coaches the Coquitlam Fig- ure Skating Club and the North Shore Winter Club, as well as be- ing the head instructor for a power skating school and a course con- ductor for the Canadian Figure Skating Association. Connell takes Bull NORTH VANCOUVER tennis player Grant Connell was nam- ed Bull player for the month of August. Connell, 23, won the award after improving his Canadian ranking from fifth to second as a result of his performances at the Canadian Open and the Volvo International.
