MAILBOX COLLINS AND THE HOLOCAUST Free speech ‘a smokescreen’ _ Dear Editor: Columnist Doug Collins makes reference tc me. in an article the general tone of which suggests that he protests too much in attempting to refute the charge of an- ti-Semitism. Mr. Collins implies, without stating explicitly, that some sort of powerful Jewish conspiracy, with the acquiescence of a ‘‘lot of dumb Gentiles,’’ is imposing restrictions Greenspace loss protested OPEN LETTER TO WEST _ VANCOUVER MAYOR DON LANSKAIL Opposite the front of our house lies the south abutment of the Up- per Levels Highway, here perhaps 30 feet high. Between the base of the wall and the street (Nepal Place) there is a strip of land 15 to 20 feet wide. When the abutment was built and then faced with fieldstone in the carly 1970s, we were told that the provincial highway department would plant shrubs and ivy to cover the bare ground and wall. Of course, this was never done. However, slowly brambles and wild shrubs took root there, and after 15 years the result was pleas- ant enough — a strip of wild greenery where birds nested and one could pick blackberries in summer. One day in March of this year a municipal work crew came by and tore this all out. A neighbor asked the leader of the crew what in the world they were doing and was told that the work was necessary “to improve drainage.”’ This is patent nonsense: without vegetation cover, dirt has been washing into the ditch and the runoff is far worse than before. My wife phoned the West Van- couver Municipal Hall to find out what was going on. After several runarounds she was referred to the supervisor of the work crews — who was not in his office and who never did her the courtesy of reply- ing to her call. We have waited two months to see whether the municipality would do the planting necessary to remove the eyesore, restore drainage, and recreate a small nat- electronics. on Canadian freedoms. He cites as an example the removal of the Lord’s Prayer from schools. Does Mr. Collins expect me, a Jew and a supporter of the separa- tion of church and state, to have my children be made to participate in or witness a sectarian religious exercise in the public schools they attend? Far worse, Mr. Collins states that an author who called the ural outpost — but nothing. I therefore turn to you to try to learn who is responsible for this piece of environmental vandalism, and what is to be done about it. Ronald C. Newton West Vancouver NOTICE TO CABLE TV. Holocaust the hoax of the century **had made a substantial case.” I believe in freedom of speech, even for Holocaust deniers. But as a Holocaust survivor whose maternal grandparents were ex- terminated at Auschwitz, I regard such views as delusional, bordering on the psychotic. Their pro- pagators, intentionally or not, contribute to confusion and evil in the world; their efforts must be exposed and repudiated. Attempts by some Jewish spokesmen to limit debate on the painful and sensitive subject of Israeli government policy towards Palestinians may be misguided. Mr. Collins’ defence of free speech, however, appears to be no more than a smokescreen for views which have caused unspeakable suffering for the Jewish people.
