Cul SHOW TO PAY TRIBUTE TO COMMITTEE HELPERS SAYING THANK you to 200 volunteers isn’t easy. By EVELYN JACOB News Reporter That's what the North Shore Cultural Policy Committee discovered when it wanted to thank the people who spent thou- sands of hours developing the North Shore’s first cultural pian. On April 21, those people, in- cluding others who helped hammer out the pla: ~- about 400 in all — will be thanked in an opening night reception at Centennial Theatre. Featuring well-known local ar- tists, the evening includes perfor- tances by choreographer Judith Marcuse, singer-dancer Ann Mor- tifee, Norman Foote, Gene Ramsbottom, Melinda Coffey, the Handsworth Jazz Band and more. The evening is also to celebrate the formation of an Arts Commis- sion, set up to advise councils on all matters concerning the arts. Establishing an Arts Commission was a cornerstone recommendation of the committee, which met for the first time on Jan. 26. “Over the past two years there have been numerous interviews, meetings, public forums and briefs. The evening celebration is to say thank you to all the volun- teers and members of the com- munity who were interviewed, surveyed, who presented briefs, who worked on policy committees, task forces and sub task forces,”’ said Oksana Dexter, cultural ser- vices coordinator for Centennial Theatre, North Vancouver Recre- ation Commission. The Cultural Policy Plan Com- mittee was formed two years ago in response to an explosion in the arts dating back to 1971 — repre- sentatives from the North Shore’s three municipalities, the North Vancouver Chamber of Com- merce, Recreation Commission, North and West Vancouver school boards, Capilano College and other bodies banded together to develop a long range plan to en- sure the growth of the local arts and support of artistic resources. The Cultural Policy Plan con- tains 68 recommendations in specific areas, some of which in- clude: ¢ Creating an enabling and sup- portive attitude towards existing cultural activities and towards the development of new arts; ¢ Setting up an administrative arts system; ¢ Coordination of municipal grants to cultural organizations; © Creating an advocacy role for municipal government in seeking LOCAL MUSICIAN Gene Ramsbottom and Judy Dennis, both of whom sit on the newly-f tural plan volunteers 47 - Wednesdry, April 19, 1989 - North Shore News your spinach!
