WV firm pumps up
shipping industry

A WEST Vancouver company has the shipping industry all
pumped up with a newly developed miniature hydraulic
pump.

The hand-size pump, developed
by Octopus Precision Products, is
used for marine automatic pilot
applications as a source of
hydraulic pressure to accurately
move a ship’s rudder.

The company was founded in
1984 by Ray Wood, Frank Navin
and Paul Kendrick. Sales have shot
up from $100,000 in 1985 to more

dustrial Research Assistance Pro-
gram grant through B.C. Research
to hire two graduate engineers to
move the pump project into the
developmental stage.

“Without the IRAP funds 1 do
the basic research, we would never

have got off the ground,’” Wood
said.

The pump incorporates only
three moving parts and is earning
the company sales to 12 of the 25
to 30 automatic pilat manufacture
ers world-wide.
