Dead highway
worker named

SQUAMISH RCMP have released the name of the man killed
while working on the construction site at Strip Creek on the
Squamish Highway just after noon Thursday.

Thirty-year-old Conley Milner was buried by tonnes of rock
while loading powder for blasting al the worksite Uiree kilometres
south of Lions Bay.

Police confirm Milner died instantly. Twe fellow workers nar-
rowly avoided injury by the falling rock.

The Richmond man had worked for Edco Construction, the
company contracted to do the highway work near Lions Bay, for
less than three months.

The incident occurred during the regular closure of the site to
traffic.

Tennis tourney
helpers thanked

THE 1,300 volunteers who helped make the Federation Cup by
NEC women’s tennis championship tournament a success were
thanked Aug. 4 at a party held in their honor at the Hollyburn
Stadium Court.

West Vancouver District contributed $2,000 towards the party.
About 70 per cent of the volunteers were West Vancouverites.

“This small contribution is well deserved,’’ remarked Ald. Mark
Sager at a special council meeting held Thursday.

“*1 think we all realize what a success it was. And how nice it was
to see our community on television,’’ said Ald. Alex Brokenshire.

The total cost of hosting the party was about $8,000.

indecent act
charges Said

A NORTH Vancouver man will appear in North Vancouver pro-
vincial court Oct. 9 to face charges stemming from a local incident
of indecent exposure.

Kourosh Baheri, 26, will face charges of two counts of indecent
exposure with intent to insult or offend and one other count of
openly exposing an indecent exhibition in a public place following a
June 2 incident on East 21st Street.

Baheri was in court Wednesday before Judge J.B. Paradis to set
a trial date.

NV man jailed
for assault

A NORTH Vancouver man has been handed a three-month jail
term and a suspended sentence with a one-year probation after he
pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a police officer and
assaulting a woman.

Bernard John Shannon, 32, was charged following a June 9 in-
cident in the District of North Vancouver.

As part of his probation, Shannon must have no contact except
by telephone or letter with the woman complainant and must also
undergo counselling as set out by bis probation officer.

Parrot loose
in WN. Van

A GREEN and red parrot has been flying loose for a number of
days in the area near Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway in
North Vancouver, area workers reported Friday.

Seen near the Ministry of Social Services and Housing office at
3140 Mountain Hwy., the parrot was first spotted Wednesday.
People in the area have been putting food out, but the exotic bird
uppears too afraid to eat.
