Place Stadium, this year’s 1987 Boat Show is more compact with the entire presentation staged over five days from Feb. 4 tc 8. While the dates have been tightened, there will be five days of displays featuring some of the largest powerboats in Western Canada. “The enthusiasm of exhibitors has been overwhelming,’’ says Roy Appleford, president of show sponsor Marine Trades Association. “People are starting to think in terms of buying big-ticket items again. We're looking forward to one of our most active shows ever.’’ To launch the 1987 Boat Show, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has provided a medium-size, motorized bathtub to be the focal point of a special media race putting teams of two from the various radio and tele- vision outlets through an obstacle course. —- : The race will begin at noon Feb. 4 and while it will not rival the America’s Cup, there will be a team trophy up for grabs. High Speed Marine Ltd. of Vancouver will be showing two new models: a 22-foot open deck Whaler styled with centre console, and a 28%-foot Interconti cruiser. . The Stolkraft hull causes the’craft to lift out of the water and ride on a cushion of air purely from the forward movement of the boat. No fans, foils or mechanical devices are needed as in the hovercraft or hydrofoil.
