A DECISION on whether the proposed extension of Montroyal Boulevard will become a reality is ex- pected from North Vancouver District council by the end of March. That decision will follow a public meeting scheduled for March 7, at which time the crosstown route and a con- ceptual land use plan will be discussed. A public meeting Feb. | drew about 250 people, who left split on the issue of whether to open the remain- ing stretch of Montroyal Bivd. through to Rockland Road. Since that meeting District staff has prepared reports dealing with traffic counts on Streets north and south of Montroyal during peak rush hours. An engineering staff report shows that traffic counts on Delbrook .Avenue, north of Montroyal Blvd., and on Prospect Avenue north of Rockland Road amounted to a peak hour volume of 150 vehicles. The Madeley- Norwood route produced about 75 vehicles per hour during peak hours, however, a partial licence plate survey revealed that about two- thirds of the traffic in this area originated from outside of the area. With the extension of Montroyal Blvd. through to Rockland Road, District staff estimates up to 150 vehicles per hour will use the route during the morning rush hours, while up to 200 vehicles per hour are ex- pected to travel Montroyal Blvd. east of Delbrook in the afternoon rush hour. The crowd that packed the District council chambers Monday expected the issue to be debated in full at that Al9 - Wednesday, February 22, 1984 - North Shore News time, but Council instead passed a recommendation from Mayor Marilyn Baker that would effectively halt discussion until after the March public meeting. Council also decided to wait until more detailed in- formation could be obtained on such issues as the impact and proximity to existing homes in the extension. area; the road width for traffic and parking over the 300 metres of the extension; driveway ‘oyal decision by end of March access to existing and new development, safety concerns surrounding the proposed five way intersection § at Rockland and Prospect; and any possible aiternatives to the extension. Council also requested that the District engineering report be sent to the RCMP in an effort to increase the enforcement of traffic speed and adherence to stop signs in the Madeley-Norwood area.
