North and West Van- couver being largely bed- room communities does not help either, says Anne-Marie Lafleur, who is also a By TERR Y LAVENDER member of West Vancouver Little Theatre. There is no strong sense of community support, she says. This support does exist in Deep Cove, which boasts two theatre groups — Theatre West and Deep Cove Stage, and in Sechelt, whose Suncoast Players are bringing two original works to the festival at Presenta- tion House. The festival ends Saturday, April 16. The seven theatre groups in the North Shore zone will Stage 11 plays in all during the six day festival. Deep Cove and Sechelt are both comparatively isolated communities, and thus can develop a strong sense of local identity that is lacking in North and West Vancouver, Lafleur says. But the North and West Vancouver groups — such as West Vancouver Little Theatre and the North Van- couver Community Players -—— must face the snobbery of people who feel that com- munity theatre 1s amateunsh, she says. Round the world by air FROM PAGE C5 This next item won't mean much for people on the North Shore but if you've got friends or family in the Fraser Valley, you might tell them about the new shuttle service provided by Air Canada — Rocky Mountain Airlines from Abbotsford to V.I Airport. Twenty bucks, each way. Sure beats fighting the highway and paying parking. They're using six-passenger Piper Najavo, twin-engine jobs - well suited to our terrain. Flight time is twenty minutes. ME! I spent quite a long time in our fnendly neighborhood Veterinary Clinic. This morning. Yeah! Timmy's been in another fight. This time the poor dope took on something with claws like razors — they made an effort to disconnect his left leg. Besides a small fortune in vet bills, Timmy is doing fine. You'd think that by the time a neutered tomcat reached the age of seven he'd quit trying to prove he was Mount Seymour's answer to [exe 290999805 The Fun Begins “AFTER SEVEN’’ 7:00 pm-2:00 am | LYNNWOOD inn Returning due to Popular Demand! APRIL 25: Marty Gillan King Kong. No such luck! While I was there two charming Scotties arrived for their rabies shots — Whiskey (black) and Soda (white). They weren't a bit happy about the whole thing but Whiskey did try a nose- touch with Timmy. Timmy explained himself with four claws and a hiss. Soda just shivered, sending out whimpers of alarm. Most dog owners enjoy taking their pets with them when they hop in the car to cross the International Boundary. Remember, a current Rabies Certificate is demanded. g This is compounded by the presence of professional theatre groups in Vancouver that provide strong competi- tion for the local produc- tions. Some of the theatre goers who might consider seeing a community play are staying away because the main per- forming hall, Presentation House, was in a state of financial uncertainty earlier this year. Some people do not realize that Presentation House is still very much alive, Lafleur says. Fighting snobbery and competition It is difficult for the groups to develop a sense of identity — either internal or with the larger community — because of a lack of per- manent, adequate facilities, Lafleur says. The two West Vancouver groups, Little Theatre (the oldest community theatre group on the North Shore) and Actors Company, based in Horseshoe Bay, suffer from a lack of proper facih- ties. They can use Klee Wyck on Keith Road, but that tiny hall can handle an audience of 30 at the most. It is used mostly for rehearsals and storage space, Lafleur says.
