true. Jock Stein had just led

Celtic to victory in the
European Cup, the first
British team ever to capture
what had been that elusive
honor. Along the way Celtic
had played 65 games over
the season, losing four,
drawing eight and winning
53 with 201 goals against
only 49.

They had been the first

team-ever to van the Cup -

with players of all one
nationality, and they were in
the process of winning their
league title nine consecutive
times, a club record
anywhere.

And now, the 60 year old
‘immortal’ sat in the vice
regal suite of the Holiday Inn
Harborside, on the 18th
floor overlooking Van-
couver, tired from a 14 hour
flight. He sat waiting for a
media reception to begin.
Stein, the manager of
Scotland was anxious to help
promote the upcoming game
between Scotland = and
Canada in Vancouver, June
12, and the two subsequent

matches in Montreal and
Toronto.
As we waited, the big.

gruff looking Scot with the
gentle voice, spoke en-
thusiastically about Scotland
and the team he was bringing
here. A team which will be
Canada's biggest ever inter
national opponent.

IT WAS AN August night back in 1967 when
the legendary Bill Shankly, the builder of the
Liverpool soccer club dynasty that could go on
forever, burst into the Glasgow Celtic dressing

be here to win. Scotland's
attacking, fast paced game
(The game's all about at-

Stein) does not allow for the
dull and defensive - a fact
which has probably hurt this
tuny nation of five milhon
people in the past.

While waiting, Stein spoke
of the North American
Soccer League and won-
dered why so many clubs
wanted to spend so much
money on big pmrced, big
name players who were al
thé end of their careers. He
would like to see some smart
team pick up a number of
young Scots who could be
easily, and = inexpensively

though they were knocked
out in the first round.

Loads of praise for the
Brazilians, of course. And
the big man’s comment on

loss to the South Americans:
‘We shouldn't have scored
first against them, it got
them angry.”

And then those Scottish
fans: “The greatest invasion
force Ive ever seen is the
Scottish army invading
