THE SKID MARK Light up your life It’s rush hour and you're siting at thé traffic hght waiting for the hght to turn green. A short time later the hight turns to green and you are preparing to continue on’ your way. The car in front of you moves slowly into the intersection and lo = and behold the left turn indicator of the car begins to blink off and on. Your pleasant personality has just tummed sour. While you watch all the traffic to your right continue along their way, here you are stuck behind this inconsi- derate driver who never had the foresight or courtesy to put the signal light on prior to reaching the intersection. In a different situation you are driving down Lonsdale or Marine Drive and all of a sudden the vehicle in front of you cuts into your lane without any warning. The two situations above are quite common to many of us dnvers. Unfortunately due to these inconsiderate moves, accidents occur and most of all tempers flare. It is the duty of every driver to indicate by hand signal or signal hghts his or her inten- tion to turn right or left. A dnver shall give it con- tinuously for sufficient distance before making the turn to warn traffic. Where there is an opportunity to give a signal, a driver shall not stop. or = suddenly decrease the speed of a vehicle without first giving the appropriate signal. Failure to comply with the above may result in a traffic ucket. If you are going to make a turn, plan your turn ahead of time. Allow drivers behind you and those approaching from the opposite direction to take appropriate action. If you are looking for a parking spot turn your indicator on and leave it on until you've located your parking spot. If you are gomg to change lanes DON'T signal and then pull into the other lane, you may be in a “blind spot” and run into a car which was out of your vision. You SHOULD check > your mirrors, then signal, then shoulder check and if all ts clear move into the other lane. Shoulder checking before you move your vehicle ts very important and can save you from many an accident. The above pattern of mirror, signal, shoulder check is a good habit to develop if you don't already use this procedure. . Once you've completed your turn or lane change ensure that your signal light has been cancelled. It’s very annoying to follow a driver who has forgotten to cancel his signal. Another good habit to get into is to check all the hghts on your car at least once a week. How many times have you been driving down the road and seen a car with only one headhght working or again in our case only one signal light? In general, if you don't have any dash- hghts you will not have any tail lights. Check the fuse box in your car, in all likeli- hood it is the fuse. When driving on highways and freeways you MUST indicate a lane change by signalling in the appropmate manner. Signals do serve a purpose and you people who do NOT use them are very inconside- rate and annoying to dnvers who unfortunately have to share the road with you. Peter Dennis, Lada of Canada president, said several sites were being examined, but he had not determined whether Lada would assemble the vehicles in a facility of its own or have them assembled by another company. “There are plenty of factories with excess Capacity that would welcome the _ business,” Dennis said. He said Volvo Canada Ltd., Bombardier Corp. and American Motors had been approached by his company about doing the work. Although the major market for Lada cars in Ontario and Quebec, Dennis said a number of Nova Scotia locations would also be suitable for an assembly plant.
