Around SYDNEY, Australia (UPI) - Two Canadian adventurers arrived in Australia Tuesday on the Lith day of a 77-day car trip that will take them through 23 countries around the world. Driver Garry Sowerby, 29, and navigator Ken Langley. 29, left Toronto Sept. 6 and after driving across Canada boarded a plane in San Francisco for Sydney. “We are locking forward to the Australian part of our yourncy,” Langley said on arrival. They car, a Volvo DI! wagon, was unloaded from a cargo plane Monday, and Enjoying s' Father leans back in his chair, twirls his wine glass and says, “How would you like to go to Hawaii?” Dead silence, followed by screams of glee. One daughter leaped to her feet and announced that she could be packed and at the door in ten minutes. Another was so entranced with the idea that she ate a large bit of spinach without gagging. The third, and oldest, asked, “Which bank did you rob?” After last year’s ill-fated visit to the pineapple islands, Brian grouched that he'd never set foot in the place again. Storms and general “mucky weather had left us moulding in our condo for days. This coupled with a six-day power failure which gibbled the elevator to our nioth-floor abode, con- vinced big dad that he was needed at the office. Or Barbados. Or Mexico. “Why did you decide to spend all that money to take us back to Hawaii?” I murmured in his ear later. “Just a sucker for punishment, I guess. But the the wo Langley said he and Sowerby would inspect in Tuesday. “We have done a lot of research for our drive across the Australian outback,” Langley said. “We leave Sydney for Brisbane on Thursday morning. Then we expect to drive at least 400 miles per day and hope to make Perth in 10 days.” Earlier, Langley said he expected Australia to be the toughest part of the trip. From Perth the car will be airlifted to Bombay, India for the trip across Asia and Europe. Saved ourselves something like $800 by going early in the month. I picked an ad. out of the newspaper and found a condo for $42 a day — one bedroom, ground floor — right beside the pool. The beach such as it is, is right beside us with no road between. There is a kitchen with ao dishwasher. Who cares? I'm stopping at the first shopping center and buying a large stack of paper plates, cups and plastic cutlery. It’s not that the kids won't wash dishes but I get heartily sick of the arguments about whose turn it is. “Even if it’s SCUM- SVILLE, Mon, it’s sure nice to be in Hawaii.” I agree. Just look for me under a palm tree with a straw hat and my typewriter. Maybe a Mai Tai. And a bunch of shells. And the local cat population. And their 26,514mile dubbed Canada's T° journey, “Odyssey eight kids. A stack of wet towels. Sand in my hair. On second thoughts, maybe I should stay home and send the rest of the group!
