Housing crisis has aldermen | ina dilemma The shortage of housing in North Vancouver District and ways to alleviate the problem dominated the regular District council meeting last week, although the subject was only ap- proached indirectly. While the items on the agenda only concerned approval of a tender notice for a new subdivision and a report on the methods of disposing of council property, some _ council members used the _ op- portunity to voice their individual concerns about housing. While council approved a tender notice for a 55-unit development at the top of Underwood Avenue in Lynn Valley, Alderman Ernie Crist expressed concern that the standard tender notice made the . developer responsible for the safety of the site. However, Alderman Mary Segal said she approved of the new multi-family development. “This is a good example of how we can meet our very pressing housing needs in the District,” she said. “There is no question that we are pricing ourselves out of the single family market,” she went on, and said that she felt the new develop- ment “is a very good compromise.” Alderman Jim Ball was more cautious in praising the new development. “If they (other council members) think this is going to provide low cost housing for anybody they must have been smoking the opium pipe,” he said. In another matter, council voted to retain their present method of disposing of District land by public tender. But, in a change in policy, council decided that in certain circumstances the District will dispose of land by public auction. Segal said she was not in favour of the public auc- tioning of land because “the function of an auction is to get a high price ... and the criticism in terms of housing and housing stock is that we are pricing ourselves way out of the market except for the very rich.” As the discussion moved to more general aspects of housing, Crist said, “if this’ council is really serious let’s investigate getting into the housing business. He said the District should provide municipal housing. Alderman Mike Lakes mentioned a recent article in a real estate newspaper in which the District’ was “thoroughly savaged” concerning the price of land in the municipality. The article was a report of a talk to the real estate board in which the speaker said there was no land available in the District. “I'd like to see the man give particulars to us,” Lakes said. photo)- Fries caused evacuation A seven storey apartment block in West Vancouver was evacuated Monday when a fire started while a woman was cooking French {nes.
