‘Many feared lost in capsized rig STAVANGER, Norway (UPI) - A massive fleet’of ships, planes and _ heli- copters criss-crossed the freezing North Sea Friday in a search for more than 100 oil workers missing in the worst oil rig disaster in history. Hopes faded for any more survivors of the giant “hotel” platform that capsized in near- hurricane winds and heavy seas Thursday. Rescue officials reported 38 bodies recovered and 89 people rescued, but 101 of the 228 people on the Alexander Kielland platform were missing. No Americans were reported involved. Thus far no one has been able to explain why the rig, now floating upside-down in the frigid water, collapsed. About 235 persons are estimated to have been aboard the rig at the time. The platform was used to accOmmodate oil rig workers who lived on it for weeks at a time. Wash. volcano eruption threat SPIRIT LAKE, Wash. (UPI) - Sulfur gas and ashes from’ erupting Mount St. Helens plumed 2 miles into the sky today and spread over a wide area while observers, fearful of a full-scale volcanic eruption, moved back farther down the mountain. The 9,677-foot-high volcano, 50 miles nor- theast of Portland, Ore.; which has been dormant since — 1857, exploded Thursday with a loud boom in the first volcanic eruption in the’ con- tinental United States since California’s Mount Lassen erupted in 1914. Although no lava had yet been sighted on the mountain, observers were moved beyond a 5-mile radius. The intense heat from two crescent-shaped fissures across the top of the. mountain — one 3 miles long, the other ! mile long — melted the volcano's snow pack and sent water cascading down the slopes. Shah's flight bad for hostages UPI — A member of the U.N. commission that visited Iran earlier this month said Thursday the shah’s flight to Egypt will have “adverse effects” on the fate of the 50 American hostages in Tehran.
