Creek rescues remembered calmed down, “There are better ways to find a high than jumping off a cliff. A little thrill in your life is not worth a lifetime.’* From page 3 vived a near tragedy at the can- yon. Perched on top of a cliff at 90-Foot Pool, they didn’t notice the strong current being created in a lower pool by the powerful waterfall adjacent to them. Their friend Eric jumped in, followed by Paul. Both barely made it out. Realizing that the conditions were dangerous, Paul attempted to warn his brother, but it was too late. Don had jumped in and was not surfacing. Paul dove into the middle of the current, frantically grabbing for his brother. Feeling Don’s arm, he pushed it up towards the surface of the water. Both boys managed to get their heads above water, but water tur- bulence prevented them from reaching shore. After treading water for about 10 minutes, Paul attempted to swim into the waterfall and even- tually managed to reach shore. Don, who had expended all his energy just to reach the surface of the. water, was too exhausted and cold to move. The RCMP arrived and with the help of a life ring, a very weak and chilled Don managed to make it to shore. The impact of their brush with death has been ‘thuge’’ according to Paul. “1 used to do things a lot crazier, snow skiing off enormous cliffs, and cliff jumping every- where. This year we have ali Bob Jones had been diving in Lynn Creek for 10 years and thought he knew all there was to know about the area. Last year, on Aug. 14, he discovered that his knowledge was limited. It was his third visit to the can- yon that year to jump. He and a friend planned to jump at 90-Foot Pool. Jones noticed that the water level was higher than usual, but he jumped in. He flew into the icy water. As he tried to swim to the edge to get out he realized the hidden power of the current. A current created by an adja- cent waterfall exerts so much force into the creek that it becomes impossible for a person to reach the edge of the pool. After expending much energy in attempting to reach the edge of the pool, Jones noticed that his friend was nowhere in sight. Luckily Jones spotted a group of people walking across the suspension bridge. Rescuers arrived shortly after, - but not before Jons had been struggling in the wate: for close to half an hour. He was hoisted out by a fire rescue crew. Said Jones, “‘It is impossible to tell how strong the currents are until it is too late.” " Finance director heads to Ukraine WEST VANCOUVER District finance director George Horwood will be part of a Canadian-American delegation of experts on fi- nance, taxation and management that is sched- uled to go to Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Hungary to- day.
