12 - Sunday, July 25, 1993 - North Shore News INQUIRING REPORTER WHILE RESIDENTS of North and West Vancouver turned on their faucets and let the water flow’ in a seemingly endless stream on lawns, cars, and down drains, a quarter of a million people in Des Moines, lowa, just spent 11 days without any drinking water. And closer to home, residents in Abbotsford recently had to boil their tap wafer during a 10-day period when their water system was contaminated. Thomas Fuller once said: ‘‘We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.’’ Perhaps we can determine the vaiue of water: West Vancouver District Council has proposed a bylaw that would put residents on a metered system. Those who are frugal with water will be rewarded while those who waste it will pay for it. Even though the GYRD has im- posed lawn sprinkling restrictions to reduce water con- sumption during the summer months, water metering may turn out to be the best method — just waich how quickly people learn to conserve water as soon as they’re financially accountable for every last drop. This week the Inquiring Reporter asks: Would a user-pay metering system encourage water conservation? Fred Massie North Vancouver No,: I don’t think so. I don’t think the pcople here waste water. I think they appreciate it. Sean Lister West Vancouver It would definitely make a big difference because people would be a iot more thoughtful about how much waier they use. Elizabeth Tischler West Vancouver I would say so, especially when you see people watering their lawns when it’s raining out. | see that quite frequently. Fred Clark North Vancouver Yes, I think so. We've been used to an adequate water supply, so we have a tendency to use all we want. We need to learn to conserve better. Katbryn Patrick North Vancouver Yes, probably, I don’t know if it’s a good thing because it would be hard to introduce, but it would definitely force people to conserve water. SURVEY TEAM: The North Shore News survey team called 402 North YES NO Shore residents to find out whether you think a user-pay water metering system would encourage water conserva- tion.
