Vell this was a much more likeable read than our last choice, Small Change. It seemed thar we all enjoved this book. It was a good story, Well-written, with believable characters. The narrative concerns a family dealing with the loss of their father and the legacy he leaves them. Carl Mis, the cre- ator of a popular comic strip, dies. His widow and grown children, long unwilling subjects of the strip, vent their grief and relief. The story is narrated by one of Carl's sons, Tim, and it’s through his eves that we see how this family operated under the control of their father. Tim is also the recipient of a bitter- sweet joke from the grave; his father’s will ” stipulates that Tim can benefit from the strip’s profits only if he abandons his career as an avant-garde artist. If you ever wanted to know more about the comic strip world this book would be a good place to start. It’s quite amazing what goes into the creation of a comic strip and the behind the scenes information is quite inter- esting. We all enjoyed the characters and found in particular that although Tim came across as sort of hopeless he was kind and car- ing as he stumbled along trying to put his family back together. Our book club discussion centered on family and change. The Mix family had been operating ina very defined manner while Carl was alive. After he died the changes that start- ed to occur were substantial. We found it interesting to see that such a dramatic crisis in a family could be a catalyst for a major , upheaval in each person. At first no one knows what the new rules are but as everyone starts to change new rules are defined. ‘This was a very interesting part of our discussion. _. The Funnies isa hight read with many nating wori humorous parts. Ev is a little predictable but not so much that vou find yourself losing interest. The general con- sensus was that we all enjoved it and appreciated reading something narrated by a young male character. Tam very excited about our next read — Hanna's Daughters by Marianne Fredriksson. In 1994 the Swedish author was awarded Author of the Year award and Book of the Year award for the novel. Hauna’s Daughters has been trans- lated in 27 languages and was a World Top Ten Bestseller in 1997. So, this should be a good ene — we'll let you know! ebb a “se J.
