The West Vancouver musical impre- sario and CITR radio presence has over the years perfected the art of the press ambush Popular musicians, Hollywood types and world-stage politicians have at various times unwittingly found them- selves suddenly in the Nardwuar pres- sure zone, For example, the esteemed Beck once told him to “f... off” in response to this one Natdwuar popped on his . UBC radio show: “Beck, come on speak up, voice of a geiteration! Why should people care about you? It certainly isn’t because of your hair or the squeegce and coffin in your video is it?” Nardwuar, lead singer of the Evaporators and founder of the indi label Nardwuar Records, went some- what undercover to maintain his access to the APEC conference. His knack of afflicting the comfort- able has seen him kicked out of similar events before. For APEC, Nardwuar assumed an out-of-character low-profile look by shaving his head and donning conserva- tive threads. A friend had counselled him to drop the “Thurston Howell” look. But the past almost caught up with him in the days leading up to Tuesday’s question and answer session with Chretien. “One guy said, ‘Hey, you’re the guy whic asks those questions. I was affaid to take the free food because I thought people might recognize me,” he said. Nardwuar’s latest target, Prime Minister " Jean Chretien, took the bait at the wrap-up news conference for the APEC economic sum- mit. As the police busied themselves dousing APEC protesters with pepper spray outside at UBC, Nardwuar got his chance: “Mr. Chretien, regarding Suharto, there’s a song out there right now by a punk band called the Nomads called the Subarto Stomp. “Earlier today as well at UBC there were an incredible amount of protesters. Do you think Mr. Chretien, if you were say 40 years younger, that you too would be.writing punk songs and protesting against APEC? - Chretien: “For men a democracy, people, protest. I have been protested a few umes in my lifetime and with a lot of people. That’s demacracy. “I did thar too when I was a student and now I’m no more a student, but I accept the Why are you losing yo yur Hair? Would you have been maced yourself back then, Prime Minister Chretien?” Chretien: “But I don’t know what you mean by thar.” Nardwuar: “Uh Mace; pepper spray.” Chretien: “I don’t know. This technique did not exist in those days. For me, pepper | put it on my plate.
