By Kevin Gillies one, Contributing Writer Ryan Dempster was selected 66th overall (seventh in the third round) by the Texas Rangers in the June 1st amateur draft, making the pitching phenom the highest drafted Canadian player. The 18-year-old, who lives in Gibsons, was ranked 89th overall by Baseball America, the authority on up-and-coming ballplayers. “He went astoundingly high.” said Twins assistant coach Paul Gemino. “People in the baseball world consider that to be incredi- ble.” There are an estimated one mil- lion Babe Ruth baseball! players (age 16 to 18) in the U.S. alone. For a Canadian to be included in the top 100 draftees is considered in the words of Twins’. coach Dave Empey, “a great accomplishment.” Last year, Dempster’s teammate Simon Pond of North Vancouver was selected in the eighth round by the Montreal Expos and is currently playing in the National’ League team’s farm system. Dempster told the News his being drafted “is pretty cool.” He said he’s been working on Ranger pitching coach Tom House’s tech- niques all year, and “I've moulded The Board of Directors Cordially Invites You to Attend the ‘Annual General Meeting of the CANADIAN MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION North and West Vancouver Branch Wednesday, June 28, 1995 6:00 pm at the into what they want.” While acknowledging — the importance of continuing his educa- tion, Dempster says, “Pro ball’s my first choice right now.” Noting the Rangers made a generous first offer he added, “It’s got to be the nght deal.” American colleges and universi- ties have been beating down Dempster’s door trying to lure him onto their campuses — schools like Princeton and Notre Dame. If Dempster signs on with an NCAA school, the pros cannot talk to him for three years. nc Rangers are trying to sign him before that happens. If he does sign with Texas, he will join Port: Charlotte (Florida) Rangers of the Gulf Coast League after he graduates from Elphinstone Secondary this month. He could also play in the short scason A league where he would face his old friend Pond. “He’s excited for me,” Dempster ‘said after a congratulatory phone call from his old teammate. Pond’s not the only one. “We're very happy for him,” said Empey, knowing he’ll lose his best pitcher if a deal is struck with the Texas team. Coach Empey said he knew Dempster would go in the second or early in the third round and that. the Rangers had indicated they would pick the righthander in the third if he was stil] available. He added that scouts were telling their teams to pick Dempster in the second round Where de you turn with a complaint against the press? Te us...
