iewers take Speed's nite-knuckl Speed *** (20th Century Fox) Rated Mature (at the Park & Tilford, Granviile, Oakridge, Coquitlam, Station Square, Scott 72, Clearbrook and Hillcrest Drive-in Cinemas). ° AVE A need for speed? Take public transit. Your daily commute could become a non-stop thrill ride. You say you take the car? That’s OK. Nine-fingered terrorist Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper), is waiting for you, preying on the primal dread of office workers everywhere — the plummeting elevator. But never fear. LAPD is here, With the derring-do of Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) and the grey matter of his partner Harry Temple (Jeff Daniels), they shaft Payne’s $3-million extortion plot. Or do they? Their commenda- tion medals are just freshly pinned when a bus explodes. Payne’s fiery calling card starts a 90-minute mad dash as another L.A. bus activates a bomb set to detonate when the speed drops below 50 miles per hour. OK, an L.A. bus hitting 50 in LA. is a stretch — a big stretch — but compared to the amazing Tim Bell FILM REVIEW stunts, that’s a minor hurdle. Action movies have a new set of pecs with a beefed-up Reeves who performs most of his own leaps/falls/fights into, on top of, or under speeding buses and subway trains. That’s right, the elevator and bus are only the first {wo acts. Trading quips in the midst of all the spine-tingles is white- knuckled Sandra Bullock as a pas- senger forced behind the bus’ wheel. One of the film’s many gags is that she’s on the bus because her driving license was suspended for speeding. The characters aren't the fresh- est, but the wild chase jams together laughs, romance and relentless action. Don’t wait for Speed to show up on video. See it on the big screen. Live danger’ 5- ly; take the bus. Workhorse grapes make excellent wines Johny Moore . WINE SPOTS TERRE DEL TEMPO 1992 PINOT GRIGIO $9.99 (Italy) , Italy’s Pinot Grigio is called inot. gris in France and is elieved to be a white mutation of Burgundy’s Pinot Noir, of alt things. (Ain’t nature wonderful?) In Italy, as in Alsace where it’s the workhorse grape, it produces excellent, crisply finished wines for dining or just plain quaffing. This one is from the Veneto: fruitier than the more famous ulcer-popping dry Soave of the region; a welcome alternative from bombastic chardonnays in this price range. Not LDB listed, but you can pick up a chilled flask at Liberty Wine Merchants’ Lonsdale Quay outlet. CHATEAU TERRY GROS CAIL- LOUX 1989 $26.80 (France) Look for price-reduction stick- ers; this one is going out of stock. 1989 was a superb year and this is a good introduction to the wines of one of Bordeaux’s small- est and most elite parishes. Huge, curranty complex fruit over cedar undertones, softer tan- nins typical of the vintage. ed drive The Piano ***% Rated R Who would think that a man with a blue-tatooed nose could be so romantic? Ada (Holly Hunter), the blush- ing bride didn’t. Stewart (Sam Neill), the stalwart groom, certain- ly didn’t. Their arranged marriage gets off on the wrong note when Scottish mute Ada arrives with Flora (Anna Paquin), her daugh- ter, on a stormy New Zealan beach. Stewart decrees that her heloved piano be abandoned on the shore, triggering a deal from George (Harvey Keitel), their neighbor-turned blue-nosed- native. He'll take the piano, if she tutors him. Only he wants to tick- le more than the ivories. Although shocked, Ada agrees to their grad- ually increased intimacy on each visit. Expertly acted and deserving of its many awards, Jane Campion’s unusual foray into eroticism plays well on the small screen, espe- cially on laserdisc where the atmospheric greens and blues positively shimmer.
