Harris will support secondary
suites once prov. sets standard

Noel got it wrong again re:

1 shall try to put what has hap-
© pened with secondary _ (illegal)
“suites in the District of North
“ Vancouver into perspective.

* Council last year wisely decided
‘not to pursue the previous
‘untenable policy of phasing. out
secondary . suites. 1 was called

‘Jackboot. Harris" for that posi-
tion, remember?

“(Councillors Crist. and Turner
and Mayor Dykeman,” on the
other hand, wanted an’ extension
of the phase-out policy.) _

As you know, suite owners were
told by then- -mayor Marilyn Baker
to voluntarily register. their suites
and agree to phase. them out in
1995.

1 urged this council to release
the 297 registered owners from all
legal obligations with us. No one
was willing to second this motion,

The current decision not to pur-

sue legalization at this time is also
.uin astute one.for these reasons:
Firstly, the /provincial govern:

ment bas yet to. make its promised .

changes.to the provincial building

code specifically: related to stand-

ards for secondary suites.
Right. now most suites would

standards, * but. do, ‘nonctheless,
‘provide most of the -affordable
‘: rental housing in the disirict.

tered and unregistered) and all the
bad feelings that that engenders.
Not to mention the bureaucratic
nightmare,

When the province enacts a
practical standard for secondary
suites then | will support the
legalization of suites.

Finally, by staying with the ‘il
legal” status of suites, the district

maintains a long-standing policy
of acting on valid written com-
plaint only, For instance, we can
close down suites if landlords
prove insensitive’ to their
neighbors.

It behooves suite owners to fit

jority do. .
There have been councillors

opposed to secondary suites. | was

never one of them. Be careful
