Life saver THE NORTH Vancouver City Fire Department is cred- iting 2 woman with saving the life of a man who was asleep on a smouldering mettress last Friday. City fire department Insp. Dave Burgess said the woman smelied smoke in an apartment building at 358 East Third St., and searched for the source but failed to locate it. She then called the fire department at 2:54 a.m. on Friday. Firefighters found the suite the smoke was coming from and then found a man lying on a smouldering mat- trese. They woke the man up and put out the fire. “The Jesson here is that if in doubt, give us a shout,’’ said Burgess. ‘‘There was no indication that there was a smoke detector in the suite. The smoke was inches away from his head,’’ said Burgess. Fire boats arrive TWO OF five new fast-response fire boats for the Van- couver Port Corp. (VPC) arrived in the port on Tuesday. The two vessels turned on their pumps under the Lions Gate Bridge, producing a plume of spray for invited dignitaries and guests aboard various ships in the cere- monia! ftotilla. The costs of the new boats, which were built by Celtic Shipyards in Vancouver, are being shared hetween the VPC aud the muncipalities of North Vancouver District, North Vancouver City, the City of Vancouver, Burnaby and Port Moody. “High performance standards will be met by these - vessels to ensure maximum firefighting capability in Vancouver harbor,” said North Vancouver City Fire Department Chief Tom Cumming, chairman of the technical sub-committee of the Port Fire Protection Committee.
