NEWS BRIEFS High speed chase A 19-YEAR-old North Vancouver man faces several charges after he led West Vancouver police on a high- speed chase July 7. A police spokesman said a ‘‘suspicious’”’ vehicle was observed travelling westbound along the Upper Levels Highway at 2:16 a.m. The driver failed to stop when police attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver led police on a high-speed chase along the Upper Levels. and then north along Highway 99 into the Lions Bay area. The suspect vehicle then hit a curb before coming to a _ stop at Calvin Grove Roud. The suspect fled the scene ‘on foot. After a short foot chase he was arrested, aiong with three other occupants of the vehicle. Police found the vehicle had been reported stolen from North Vancouver earlier in the day. Michael Rodney Baker, the driver of the stolen vehi- cle, has been charged with possession of stolen property, dangerous driving and obstructing a peace officer. He.is scheduled to, appear in West Vancouver provin- cial court on Aug. £8. Van fire THE NORTH Varcouver City Fire Department responded to a van fire early Thursday morning at 333 Brooksbank Ave. A fise department spokesman said a security guard in the area bad noticed the van parked on the street at 1:40 a.m. The guard walked over to the vehicle to take a closer leok. . He noticed the igaition was hanging down and thai the ‘key was still im the ignition. The security guard then decided to take the key out of the ignition and lock the vehicle but when he settempted to remove the key the engine of the van suddenly started, catising a fire. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire. The van was a total loss. Complex opens LYNN YALLEY Lions Housing Society’s new 46-home townhouse complex called Lions Premier Court will be officially opened on Sunday at 2 p.m. The complex is for iow-income families tiving in North Vancouver. It was paid for under federal and provincial social housing programs. Lions Premier Court is located at 1055 Premier St. Nerth Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA David Schreck will _ attend the opening ceremony. The event includes tours of the compiex coaducted by members of the Lyan Vatley Lions Housing Society. Tenants of the rew complex spend no more than 30% of their incomes towards rent. The federal government contributes two-thirds and the provincial government one-third of the $721,000 annual subsidy required for the housing compiex.
