Report on outdoor program upsets West Van.parents PARENTS WANTING a rugged outdoor education pro- gram for Grede 10s in West Vancouver School District 45 (WVSD) were surprised recently to discover that their proposal was almost back to step one after five months in WVSD bureaucracy. And perents’ representative Kim Marshall told the schoo) board he was disappointed in WVSD administration for not in- _volving parents in a report that didn’t. endozse a' Trek-type pro- gram. * “This report comes out and we ‘have Rad no input whatsoever,” ’ Said Marshall. Marshall, who lead a deiegation in May favoring a Trek-type pro- gram, told the News ite found out by accident that morning that the Trek program was going to be discussed at the Nov. § District 45 evening meeting. West Vancouver District 45 School Board (WVSB) received a report at the meeting dated Nov. f by assistant-superintendent Bob Overgaard and an acccompanying letter by superintendent Doug Player that concluded a Trek-type program should not be im- plemented ir the scitocl district at this time. “I think the programs we have already strain and put demands on our staff and our small student body,”’ said Player. ‘*These programs can be laid on . from high and can be less suc- cessful than ones coming up from the schools,’’ said Player. But despite agreeing with some of Player’s concerns and express- ing reservations, the school board voted to approve in principle im- plementation of a Trek-type pro- gram worked out by parents and school administration. The board said the program proposal must be ready for consideration by Jan. 15. “I would like to see this pur- WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD sued further. Perhaps to work on a joint basis with North Van- couver (School District 44),”’ said trustee Barbara Howard. WVSB chairman Jean Ferguson said funding a Trek-type prograia in a time of restraint was the ma- jor problem. “If parent fundraising doesn’: come through, how can we fund it? We can’t,*’’ said Ferguson. At tne May 13 school board meeting, more than 30 parents and students along with 42 letters of support backed a deleggiion that was turned down for a September 1990 pilot program based on the popular Trek pro- gram at Vancouver’s Prince of Wales Secondary School. North Shore students are cur- rently excluded from enrolment in ihe Vancouver Trek program which involves five months of classroom work and five months in the wilderness as an alternative to traditional Grade 10 studies. The five-year-old Vancouver Trek program has always operated in the biack, according to Prince of Wales vice-principal Ted Hunt. Vancouver students who are physically fit and have passed Grade 9 are eligible for the Trek program at Prince of Wales. Vancouver parents pay a $300 yearly fee and they have raised as much as $30,000 annually by sell- ing Christmas trees to fund the Trek program. IN AN effort to ‘‘turn back the crime wave’? in West Vancouver, the Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers Association is in- itiating 2 pilot program that would encourage citizens to assist police in their efforts. West Vancouver is still Statistically the safest community in Canada, West Vancouver Police Department’s patrol divi- sion head, Insp. Grant Churchill said at the association’s Nov. 13 annual meeting. But the police department, which has grown from a one-man operation in 1912 to 74 officers in 1991, now has a highly effective ‘target team’’ charged with discovering trends in crime and countering them. Churchill described two recent successes of the team: a $!-million drug bust and the capture of men involved in robbing small stores of cigarettes. Crimes against the more defenceless members of society, such as the 300% increase in sex- ua! assaults over last yeas, prompted West Vancouver Ald. Andy Danyliu to encourage the Jocal police department and the Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers Association to look for innovative solutions. Through the pilot program en- dorsed by the association, the police will tatk to smail groups in ~ neighborhoods abaut what to watch out for ant take note of.
