writer Rudyard Kipling visited the
blossoming city of Vancouver on
Canada’s western shores, and was
so impressed with its beauty that
five years later he invested in real
estate here, buying 20 acres of ‘‘a
wilderness called North Van-

His speculation brought him fit-
ile joy: after paying taxes on it for
years, he learned it belonged to
someone else. He had been royally
had. by an apparently well-known
con-man identified only as
**Steve.’””

Kipling’s misguided enterprise is
just one of many fascinating
-glimpses of locai history brought
to light by writer Chuck Davis in
Reflections, the book he has writ-
ten for the Centennial of North
Vancouver District.

Davis, who is also a well-known
local broadcasier and journalist,
will be at the Lynn Valley Branch
of North Vancouver District
Library on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7

- p.m. to present a free talk based

on his book.

Long-time residents of the
District may remember some of
the features and personalities
Davis will recall; relative new-
comers to the area may be
astonished to learn that there was
once a zinc mine on Seymour
Creek, that streetcars ran up
Lonsdale Avenue and Lynn Valley
