Last week, trout that kad receatly been stocked ia North Vancouver’s Thain Creek were the appareat victims of a North Van- coaver District works crew who unwitting- ly pumped polisted water down 2 storm drain and into the uk. And while the ‘ots number of fish kill- ed was comparatively small, the deaths are yet another exampie of urban man’s ig- norance of nature’s fragility; they also il- lastrate local ignorance of the vulnerability of local creeks to man-made environmental change. Train Creek is 2 smal tributary of Mosquito Creek, which supports trace populations of coho and chum salmon and some cutthroat and steelhead trout. Mosquito Creek’s fish populations have saffered continual disruption and destruc- tion from the pressures exerted by North Shore population growth and development, as have the fish populations of all North Shore creeks and rivers. it bears continual repeating, then, that storm sewers on the North Shore run into area creeks or rivers. Poisons that go down those sewers end up in creeks, in fish, in our food chain and ultimately in us. Everybody on the North Shore, especial- ly our municipal governments, should know this and treat what’s left of our nat- eral environment with the respect it deserves. Support animal welfare groups Dear Editor: I feel moved to write you on behalf of the wonderful groups of volunteers who, day in, day out, devote their time, love, energy and money to the welfare of homeless I refer specifically 10 Pets Lid., Doris Orz and Aid to Animals in Distress, non-profit groups who find good homes for animals that have had to be given up by their owners.
