Question: ! read in this column Options for volunteers PARTICIPATE IN your com- munity by volunteering. Listed below is a sample of the many volunteer opportunities available. You can make a difference. A COMMUNICATION Aide is needed to encourage pre-schoolers to communicate through play. The volunteer will interact with children in a wusy setting and work indepeiudenti once oriented. The hours are frum 9 a.m. to noon once or twice per week. A PATIENT, friendly person or family is needed to welcome re- cent immigrants to the communi- ty; acquaint them with community services and facilities; and assist them with English language skills. The hours are flexible. AN OFFICE worker who works well with others is needed to an- swer phones, take registration and direct people to classes at a local YMCA. Orientation and a free membership to the YMCA will be provided. The hours are from 11:30 am. to 12:30 p.m. on weekdays. A SOCIABLE, non-judgmental person is needed to assist with a luncheon program. The volunteer will socialize and give practical and emotional support to young mothers and their babies. The hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays, but flexible. AN ENTHUSIASTIC, patient person is required to assist an in- structor in a variety of classes for the mentally handicapped. Classes include adult literacy, drama and personal development. The hours are 7 to 9 p.m. week nights. The volunteer should be sensitive to the needs of mentally handicapped. people. DUCK MARSHALLS are needed. Strong volunteers are needed to help on Sunday, March 10 with the Capilano River Duck Race. Volunteers are needed to scoop out the ducks after the race and assist during the race. Answer: If you want to com- plain about something you have seen on television, heard on the radio or read in a newspaper or magazine, the best place to start is with a letter to the particular organization that produced the offensive material.
