12 ~ Friday, September 14, 1990 - North Shore News ‘Kcolo o} / Time to get your household ready for curbside recycling AUTUMN JIS the time I get the urge to do my spring cleaning. This sensation being somewhat foreign to me, I try to make the best of it and to that end have taken a holiday from work — paid work, that is — using my week off to wade through mountains of laundry and generally create order out of chaos. With your blue box either on your doorstep or on its way, perhaps now is a good time to take a look around your home and ‘‘ecologize”’ it fur winter. What are all the green projects you’ve been meaning to do but have been putting off? Do you have that brick in your toilet tank yet? Have you mace room for your blue box and space for other recyclables, in a location that’s convenient for all your family members? This column is devoted to a miscellany of information that may serve to motivate you into tackling some environmental tasks around the home. Have you been putting off composting because you’re con- fused about the different options available? Be confused no more — the Stili Creek Compost Demonstration Garden is officially open to the public this Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. and showcases working models of 10 different focally manufactured compost boxes, all rodent roof. Worm composting is one of the systems on display, which may be of special interest for those of us with no yard to cal! our own. The demonstration garden is located at 4856 Still Creek Ave., just off Douglas in Burnaby. It will re- main open to October (or later, depending on public interest), Wednesday to Sunday, from /0 a.m. to 4 p.m. nat Don’t throw out your leftover traces of paint, pesticides, pool! cleaners or other hazardous wastes. The GVRD will be holding a hazardous waste drop-off on the North Shore, probably on the last weekend in October. Do you have any tires that you need to get rid of? Try to kick the meat habit at least one day per week, and gradually decrease your consumption from there. John Robbins’ book, Diet for a New America, describes in sober- ing detail the reasons a meat- based diet isn’t healthy for indi- viduals, the planet and certainly not for the animals produced to feed our addiction. His views, already very well documented, are given further support by the recently released results of the Cornell-China-Ox- ford Project on Nutrition, Health aud the Environment, an interna- tional, large-scale, long-term study of 6,500 Chinese people and their Peggy Trendell-Whittaker ECOINFO dietary habits. The findings (er.capsulated in this month's East West magazine) prompted principal investigator, Colin Campbell! of Cornell Uni- versity, to say ‘‘We must come to realize that we're basically a vegetarian species.’" Yes, contrary to myth, it is not “‘natural’’ for humans to eaf meat. Given the length of our digestive tract, the way in which we process nutrients and other factors, we are much better equipped to live without animal - products. Vegetarians are, in fact, much less likely to suffer from such diseases as cancer and osteoporosis than their meat- eating counterparts. Don’t worry that you won’t get enough variety in your diet. Once you learn to approach cooking from a vegetarian angle, you'll, find there’s a lot more to look forward to than just salad bars. After all, consider the huge ar- ray of plant life on this planet — then compare that with the three or four animals we usually find on our plates. If anyone's stuck in a rut, it’s the carnivores among us. nent If you're restocking your bathroom cabinets, remember to look for cosmetics, deodorants and shampoos that are minimally packaged, biodegradable and not tested on animals.
