Avoid mishaps over the CHRISTMAS IS the season when the air is electric with anticipation and excitement, but it is also the time when the busy preparations for the holidays can lead to acci- dents. These tips can help you avoid mishaps or even tragedies over the holiday season. HANDLE WITH CARE A tree is one of the joys of the Christmas season, but it must be handled carefully in order to elim- inate the risk of fire: — store evergreens outside before use — stand the tree in water when it is inside and check water level dai- ly — don’t put a tree near a fireplace or heating vent — turn tree lights off when no one is in the room — tree decorations are attractive to young children but can be dan- gerously shaped or run by electrici- ty and can therefore be harmful ~- don't leave smal] children unat- tended around a Christmas tree CHECK LIGHTS Make sure to check and replace wiring, sockets and plugs that are frayed, cracked or have loose con- nections. Lights are designed to be used individually; if you group them together they may overheat, creating a fire hazard. Mini-lights have three different voltages and the correct voltage holidays bulb must be used when replacing burnt out fights: 12V for strings of 10-11 bulbs, 7V for strings of 15- 35 lights and 3.5V for strings of over 35 bulbs. Treat Christmas tree lights with the same care and respect that you would treat any other electrical equipment. CHOOSE SAFE TOYS Regulations under the Hazarc- ous Products Act of Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada en- sure that new toys available are among the safest in the world. But, even the safest toy can be danger- ous if not used or chosen properly: — choose a toy suited to your child’s age —- read all safety and usage in- formation when buying —examine toys for loose parts and sharp edges, especially for younger children — consider not only how the toy is designed to be used but how it might be misused by your children — when selecting electrical toys, choose those that have a Canadian Standards Association label GiFT WRAP PILES UP With the excitement of opening gifts, wrapping paper can pile up quickly. The moment that gifts are unwrapped any plastic bags should be thrown away so that toddlers won't suffocate. If wrapping paper is to be burned in your fireplace, burn it a bit at a time to avoid ex- cessive flames and heat. Achieve built-in look From page 23 line of the refrigerator enclosure. This gives the area an updated, built-in look and provides an ex- tra-deep counter as a bonus. Another idea involves recessing the refrigerator into the wall behind it, if it’s a non-weight-bear- ing interior wall, To accomplish this, remove the sheetrock im- mediately behind the product. Then frame an area wide enough to accommodate the refrigerator. Remove the studs between the frame, and install a new header for stability. Now move the refrigerator back into the recess and install cabinetry around it. To achieve a clean, built-in look without the major expense of cab- inetry, create a stud wall frame for the new appliance — a great solu- tion, especially if the new refrigerator is somewhat larger or smaller than the old one. The overali construction is limited in scope and far less expen- sive than the combination of special cabinetry and shallower, more costly, built-in appliances. Once you discover how easy it is to make the purchase of a new refrigerator the occasion for a mini-facelift that leaves your kitchen refreshed and your bank account in good shape, too, you may even want to tackle the rest of the job.
