has been dynamically tested by the
manufacturer and that it conforms
with all requirements of the Cana-
dian Motor Vehicle Safety Stand-
ard — Section 213.1 for infant
carriers, Section 213 for child safe-
ty seats, and Section 213.2 for
booster cushions.

Combination seats, which may
be used from birth until a child
weighs approximately 18 kg (40
Ibs), must meet the requirements
of both Sections 213 and 213.1.

eral information label, affixed to
the side or bottom of the safety
seat.

duct recall lists? To find out if a
public notice has ever been issued
on that restraint. model, get the
name, model number and date of
manufacture from the information
label, then cali Consumer and
Corporate Affairs Canada, Trans-
port Canada or your local Cana-
dian Automobile Association Club

office and ask if that particular
restraint system has ever been
recalled for a safety-related defect.

all the parts intact? Examine the
child restraint carefully for
weaknesses such as a cracked or
warped plastic shell, a dent in the
metal frame, loose rivets, or frayed

harness straps.

Check the seat against the
diagrams in the installation in-
structions and make sure all the
parts are attached as shown, in-
chiding the chest retainer clip and

tether strap. The tether anchorage
plate, which is bolted into the
vehicle, will likely have to be pur-
chased separately. These are avail-
able at a nominal cost from some
Canadian Tire outlets, department
stores, and children’s furniture
shops.

© Will the restraint system fit in
each car that will be used to trans-
port the child? Unlike a depart-
ment store item, it may not be
possible to return a child restraint
that was purchased at a garage sale
or from a second-hand outlet.
