‘Take time to negotiate Dear Editor: If you are reading this letrer then clearly the world did not end when Canadians voted No in the referendum on the Chaslottctown Accord. In fact, as 1 write, the C Canadian dollar has actually risen a little on the Tokyo markets. This proves that warnings by the political elite that the dollar would collapse with a No vote were empty scare tac- tics, as were their many other predictions of dire consequences. Thank goodness the majority of Canadians felt that the accord had too many imperfections to be worth a Yes vote. Referendum was waste of money Dear Editor: Now that the painful refer- endum is over we can add the $200 to $500 million price tag to our huge national debt. This totally outrageous, wasteful sum of money could have gone into badly needed job creation, job training or other economic incentives. The economy has been ne- glected long enough and it is time they got on with dealing with it, but only after we We can now take some time off constitutional negotiations, —ap- proaching them ain at a Future date on a step-by-step basis ine stead of as an omnibus package of unrelated items. In particular we have another chance to work on true Triple-E Senate. During the Reform Party of Canada assembly in Winnipeg last week there was a free vote of del- egates on the principle of a Triple-E Senate. The delegates from Ontario, who must have numbered several hundred, voted 98% in favor. ‘These delegates felt that if the population of Ontario was asked “Do you support a Triple-E Senate?” the majority would an- swer Yes. This is exactly the opposite to what our politicians were telling us about the Ontario attitude to Triple-E. Reform Party Ontario delegates said that Ontario, now in the grip of recession, has realized that it needs the West as much as the West needs Ontario. In addition, there is a growing sense that represeniation by pro- vince in the Senate is a fair and reasonable expectation. Based on this example, future constitutional proposals would best be initiated by the people rather than the politicians because today’s politicians are operating within a parliamentary structure that is outdated and completely unsuited to our Information Age. The government is out of touch with the people, but the people are ready for a greater say in the operations of their government. Only the Reform Party of Canada is addressing this prob- lem.
