Miurderer’s appeai dismissed THE B.C. COURT of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by the con- vieted murderer of Brinks guard Bob Persowich to have that con- viction overturned. Evan Clifford Evans’s appeal was dismissed last week after it was ruled to have been abandoned. The 31-year-old Evans was convicted of first-degree murder fol- lowing the June, 1984 shooting of Persowich in the Park Royal shopping mall. Evans, who wore a motorcycle helmet to conceal his identity during the robbery of receipts from the Park Royal liquor store, was convicted tast month of 26 additional criminal counts laid against him in connection with 10 armed robberies. He was sentenced to an additional 16-year jail term, which will be served concurrently with his life term. . , NV man to trial on assault charge A 29-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was ordered to stand trial on charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm. James Raymond Sewell faces the charges in connection with a June 27 incident in which he is alleged to have assaulted two other males. Appearing before Judge J. B. Michael Vichtor Gardner was originally charged with one count of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public in connection with an incident Nov. 7 in which he allegedly assaulted a female. After appearing before North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.D. Layton Friday, Gardner was remanded to March 2 to stand trial on the charges. Woman jailed for fraud A 37-YEAR-OLD woman of no fixed address was sentenced to one year in jail after she pleaded guilty to 11 charges of obtaining goods by false pretences. Joan Valerie Morrow (aka Joan Valerie Halifax) was criginally charged with four counts of fraud in connection with incidents in 1984 and 1985 in which she obtained such goods as T-shirts, plants and a watch from various retailers in West Vancouver. She was charged with an additional seven criminal couats of false pretence following incidents during December, 1984 in which ° she obtained goods from Japan Camera. Morrow also pleaded guilty to failing to appear for a scheduled May 3 court date and misleading a police officer on Oct. 5. Appearing before North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.D. Layton, Morrow was sentenced to one year on each fraud charge and three months in jail on the other two charges.
