STOP DELIVERIES Protect propane cylinders from tampering or theft From page 15 broiler compartments. ° To avoid mildew or odor build- up, leave the oven door slightly ajar during the winter. Lights: « Ensure gas valves are closed off. GENERAL Cylinders and regulators should be protected against tampering or theft. If you deem it necessary to disconnect and move them for safe winter storage; transport and store cylinders upright, never in any building and away from sources of heat or ignition. If the regulator has been discon- nected from the piping system, it’s a guod idea to screw in a brass plug or other practical plug in the Piping inlet to keep out moisture and dust. {f your area is plagued with winter visitors (animals), it may be a good idea to cap or plug open vents, so birds or animals cannoi nest in them — but be sure to hang a sign as a reminder near the ap- pliance if you do, and remember to remove the restrictions before you relight the vented appliances. If you are on automatic delivery, notify your propane supplier to stop fuel deliveries until you re- open next season. HEATING If you use your cottage or cabin during the fall and winter, you most probably have a propane heater or furnace. Now is the time to ensure that your heating ap- pliances are in proper working order. Perhaps it needs cleaning. Is the vent or chimney clean and free of all obstructions. Is the pilot in good shape? Tips for workshops IF YOU cut a sheet of sandpaper in half and fold it into three equal parts it will go much further than just folding it in half. You can use the exposed top and bottom sur- faces then fold out the one tucked inside for a completely fresh sur- face. This method also creates a size that fits nicely for hand work. e Cover the back of fine sand- paper with masking tape before us- ing. You will find the paper lasts much longer without tearing. It works particularly well on power sanders whether oscillating or straight line. © Before starting to paint, take a nai] and drive several holes into the groove that the lid fits into. This will allow any paint that gets into the groove to drip back into the can instead of building up and running down the sides. It also prevents a large splash when you replace the lid. Make a board with shallow rais- ed sides that you can fasten to the top of your stepladder to hold screws, nails or tools without hav- ing them roll off onto the floor. If you like, you can make only half of the board a box and drill holes into the other half to hold tools. A word of caution: De not leave anything on top of the ladder when you are moving it if you don’t want it to end up hitting you on the head. Does the burner produce the desired blue flame?/f you feel un- comfortable about any of the above, consult your propane sup- plier, In most cases, the best solution is to have a qualificd gas ser- viceman inspect, adjust or repair your propane system. BARBECUES, CAMFERS, If you’re a camper, hiker or barbecuer, perhaps you have some propane equipment that you are stowing until next year. Remember to stow all propane cylinders away from sources of heat or sources of ignition. It is not recommended to sicre any cylinders in your home. The ideal storage area is outdoors, or a well ventiiated, unheated out building, eg. garden shed. Never store propane in a base- ment or a closet. Be sure cylinders are stored upright and that the outlets are firmly closed and tight- ly plugged. Most propane companies will be glad to supply you with ‘POL Plugs’? at a low cost, or in most instances, free of charge. One more point — treat an empty or half full cylinder with the precau- tions and respect you would a full one, If you are bringing portable cylinders back from your cottage, they should be plugged, carried upright and the transport area of your vehicle should be ventilated. If you’re using the trunk of your car, a device called ‘‘Latchit’’ will quickly and efficiently latch your trunk lid in a partially open posi- tion, ensuring proper ventiiation. If you were having difficulty with one of your appliances this past season, but never got around to having it serviced, now is the time to arrange getting it done with your propane supplier. If vou are considering a new ap- pliance or equipment, this time of year can provide some excellent bargains with end of season clear- ance sales on RV equipment, cam- ping equipment, barbecues and uc- cessories.
