€10 - Sunday, June 17, 1984 - North Shore News Ge travel Current currency in South Pacific JUST RECEIVED a letter from Kerry McDer- mont, Silver Wing representative in Las Vegas. The lady has a good memory! When we visited Las Vegas several months ago I had asked Kerry about restaurants in general but Basque in par- ticular, having become a devotee last summer in northern Nevada. At the time, Kerry had to admit that she’d never heard of a Basque restaurant in Las Vegas. (She did better than a lot of people I asked — at least she knew what | was talking about.) In her letter she enclosed a clipping announcing the opening of ‘‘The Only Restaurant in Las Vegas Ser- ving Basque Cuisine’’ — call- ed the Flying Dutchman, it’s at 598 E. Flamingo (735-0000). That phone number may look odd but is correct. The restaurant serves tunch (11-3) and dinner (6-11) every day and is open 24 hours for snacks and drinks, presumably Basque also. Also from the mailbag: DEAR BARBARA: Recently in the Red Deer Advocate, you had an article about currency when travel- ing in Europe. What would you suggest regarding curren- cy in the South Pacific? On July 28 our family of four will be leaving on a trip to Australia, with three night stopovers in Honolulu, New Zealand and Fiji. Would you recommend taking Canadian travellers’ cheques and some a cur- rency for Honolulu Also, what is the best way to figure oul how much money we will need on the trip? We already know the price of our hotels in the stopovers and will be staying with friends in Australia. The duration of the entire trip ts ane month. I very much enjoy reading your articles. They are sometimes comical but most ly informative and, goodness knows, with our ‘‘Canuck Buck’” not doing so. well these days, we need all the in- formation we can get We are not seasoned travellers by far and want this trip ‘*a thrall of a hfetume’’ Thank you so much for your anticipated help. ANSWER: Forget taking Canadian dollars — use Australian in- stead. First, the value of the cheques is closer to the cur- rencies of both Fiji and New Zealand. Second, both coun- tries are more familiar with the Australian. Travellers’ cheques in other currencies are difficult to cash in Australia. Ee travel- wise by Barbara McCreadie I took mine in American dollars and lived to regret — no stores, restaurants Or even casinos would accept them. | kept running out of cash at awkward moments and Jiad to rely on hotels to cashsmall amounts, losing quite bit in the process. Have you planned tours in any country? Estimate the cost at $20 per person, half day, and $40 whole day. Car rentals? Estimate $40 a day which should include gas and insurance. Lastly, consider spending money for souvenirs, gifts and personal bargains — like the lovely Australian woollens at prices you can't afford, but can’t afford to pass up. — When you’ve done your totals, add another $500 for extras.
