Phillips, now 67, has in-

vented things ranging from
rayon badminton § shuttle-
cocks to paper car-top boats,
of which he sold 6,500 during
the 1950’s.

What motivates this North
Vancouver inventor to
translate his off-beat ideas in-
to useable gadgets in his clut-
tered back-yard workshop?

“*It’s an trritation,’’ said
Phillips. ‘‘An unwillingness
to leave things the way they
are.”’

His latest invention is the
‘*Incredimill’’. It’s a grinder

hold it up. The Incredimill
can grind any foods that a
regular, more expensive
food-mill can grind — and
can even grind up oily foods
like soybeans and corn that a
regular mill can’t handle,
said Phillips. And the In-
credimill — at $44.27 — is

model airplanes was a popular pastime for boys.
Most ran on a single-rubber band motor. But
‘something moved Phillips to successfully devise a
model plane that used three rubber-band motors to

the price of even a hand-
cranked food grinder, he
said.

The *Incredimill took
‘‘about a year’’ to develop.
Philips says he got the idea
from a little électric coffee-
grinder he owns. So _ far
Phillips has sold ten In-
credimills, and he hopes the
idea will catch on.

But dreams of being the

first to invent something as .

successful as the can opener
or scissors are never far from
any inventor’s mind. Phillips
had just a taste of this over 20
years ago, when he invented a
paper boat that could easily
be carried on car tops.

‘‘They were cedar-planked
boats covered with paper.
The paper was dipped in a
sort of jello, actually. It was
a hide glue, gelatin glue.
From boiled hides and bones.
During the war the importer
was getting it from England.
Then they stopped importing
it and called it a foodstuff.
So it was ... fairly
nutritious,’’ said Phillips.

He said the gelatin was
‘‘stabilized’” with a metal
salt. The advantage of the
paper boats was that they
were lighter and.cheaper than
canvas-covered ones. Phillips
said production stopped in
1962 after fiberglass came on
the market as a light, strong
alternative. But 6,500 of the
paper boats in various sizes
were sold, ranging in price
from $75 to $600. Phillips
said he made ‘‘some’” money
from the invention.

For most aspiring inven-
tors, the failures far out-
number the successes. And
Phillips has had a few pro-
jects that turned out ...
well, not so good. Like his
automatic cigarette_box.

“One time I invented a
cigarette box. When you
opened it up, a whole row of
