a mailbox <] A7 - Wednesday, November 9, 1983 - North Shore News Trustees ‘walk out’ Dear Editor: The cancellation of the School Board meeting scheduled in North Van- couver for November 8th shows a complete lack of leadership by the NOVVA school trustees who form the majority of the board. One must question the moral fibre of these trustees and ask how the teachers can be expected to resist the pressures on them to walk out of the schools when the elected school trustees lead the way. The reason given for the cancellation, by the chairman of the North Vancouver School Board, that there were no items for the agenda, is unbelievable. The board is claiming that the future of the education system is in danger, their employees are on the brink of a work stop- page, the 1984 budget still has to be announced and school board elections are imminent, but there are ab- solutely no items for the agenda? If the NOVVA members of the school board wish to walk out in sympathy with the so- called Solidarity movement, that is their choice, but please do not expect us to believe that there is no work for the board to do at this time. Ernie Sarsfield North Vancouver School board shouldn' be a ‘secret society’ Dear Editor: Chief Joe, Chairman of the North Van School Board, views the cuts to be made in school district expenditures as enrolment declines to be **alarming’’. What I would view as alar- ming is the suggestion of an elected official that the high cost of running a school district should remain, even though the number of students is decreasing. It makes one wonder where the money is really being spent. Someone wondered just that, out loud, at a school board meeting when asking how many trustees had at- tended an education § con- ference in Halifax and at whose expense. Chief Joe didn’t know the trustees who went and he didn’t know how much the taxpayers. con- tributed to the cost of the four trustees and the school admininstrator. It is time that parents and taxpayers got answers to the questions they put to our schoo! board. The trustees were not elected to form a **secret society’’ but to prac- tice fiscal restraint in the Management of a very large budget on our behalf, and to keep the public informed of where the money is being spent. Doug Vincent North Vancouver Davis wrong about pipeline Dear Editor: In response to Jack Davis’s letter regarding the natural gas pipeline to Vancouver Island — what does he know about pipe lines and barges carrying natural gas? If B.C. Hydro gets the contract it will cost us a bundle! Westcoast Transmission is a private company with its own financ- ing available. As for barging tanks of gas down the coast as an alter- native, this is downright stupid, as we already have tanks of deadly gas sitting on the bottom of the strait, or does Mr. Davis not remember that incident? I’ve lived on the coast most of my life and wouldn't want to see it happen again. The pipeline through the northern route would create a lot of jobs, which we badly need, and it would also clean up our air. Oil and hog fucls are polluting our air, whereas natural gas doesn’t. It may cost a litthe more, but at least Classified 986-6222 2nd Look Studio CORRECTION In the November 6 Captlano Mall back page ad the Super Special that 1ead Complimentary facial for 2nd Look Bp6hould have tread Comptmentary Make up Sorry tor Mence this caused any Iinconve may have Capilano all we stay healthy. Their 13-member executive is pledged to enlist candidates for our civic government. This year their executive dropped by the wayside, reducing to nine. With three incumbent aldermen seeking re-election and a _ former Mayor of North Vancouver filing his papers minutes before nominations closed, they contributed nothing.
